(COLUMBUS) – The ProMusica Chamber Orchestra announced today that it has
assembled a search committee to assist the Board in finding a replacement for long-time
Music Director Timothy Russell.
Todd Swatsler, an attorney at Jones Day in Columbus, as well as a ProMusica
board member and past board president, will lead a well-rounded team that includes
ProMusica associates, musicians, volunteers and fellow board members. Search
Committee members to assist Swatsler in recommending Dr. Russell’s successor include
ProMusica Executive Director Janet Chen, ProMusica board members Brent Jackson,
Mark Sholl and Susan Quintenz, and ProMusica musicians Marjorie Bagley (violin) and
Tim Leasure (trumpet).
“In ProMusica, Tim has built an amazing orchestra that has been nationally
recognized for its artistic excellence, innovative programming and commitment to new
music.” Swatsler noted. “Finding someone with Tim’s talent, passion, energy and vision
is a daunting task, but with the help of Tim and the ProMusica staff, we are confident we
will find a candidate with the qualities that our musicians and supporters deserve.”
Earlier this month, ProMusica announced that Maestro Russell, who co-founded
ProMusica and has led the orchestra since 1978, would be stepping down at the end of
the 2012/2013 season. Russell will become the conductor laureate beginning with the
2013/2014 season and will conduct a “Founder’s Day” concert for the 2013/2014 and
2014/2015 seasons.
While the search committee’s membership has been arranged to ensure balance
and represent all constituents, Swatsler stressed that the entire orchestra will be invested
and involved in the process of selecting a new Music Director. Also, working closely
with Swatsler and the committee will be a group of advisors offering input, guidance and
important feedback.
“For any of us who have worked with Tim, it is no surprise that he is focused on
ensuring the success of ProMusica over the next 30 years,” said Swatsler. “The Search
Committee understands the tremendous responsibility we have to Tim, to Janet and the
rest of the staff, to our donors and subscribers, and to our musicians, to do all we can to
engage a Music Director who can continue the pursuit of ProMusica's extraordinary
mission. We have every intention of working to assure that our search is successful.”
Under Russell’s direction, ProMusica has commissioned 51 new works and
presented 106 world premieres. The orchestra has won eight awards from the American
Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) for innovative programming.
Russell has also produced 28 CDs; his recordings have earned critical acclaim and two
Grammy nominations. Dr. Russell was named the winner of the 2006 Ohioana Pegasus
Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions in the arts and humanities.
