ProMusica Prelude April 2009

Dear Friends:

Can it really be? Have we already come to our final subscription concert weekend of this celebratory 30th anniversary season? What a great season it has been to date! But, in fact, we have one more wonderfully exciting subscription program planned for you . . . on April 4th and 5th.

Our two concerts feature a diverse offering of four works from various parts of the world and two stellar guest artists, both returning to play with ProMusica after astonishing solo debuts with our orchestra.

We are delighted to welcome the acclaimed American pianist Donald Berman back to the stage of the Southern Theatre as the featured performer in Ernst Bloch’s exciting Concerto Grosso. This work will open both of our programs. On Saturday evening, as we did last year, the strings of ProMusica will be joined by two dozen high school musicians in this performance. These gifted young instrumentalists are our partners in our fantastic Musicians in the Schools program. We are proud to be able to showcase their talents side by side with our wonderful group as a part of a major musical event.

Many people are not fully aware of the truly astonishing breadth of our organization’s educational offerings. I encourage you check out all that we are doing . . . www.promusicacolumbus.org/outreach.

Our congratulations and gratitude are offered to Education Director, Julia Hare, and our hard working Education Committee, chaired by ProMusica Board member Mark Sholl!

As our season is wrapping up, I want to take a moment to thank our entire staff:

JANET CHEN, Executive Director; ASHLEY GRIMES, Communications and Special Events Manager; JOSEPH CALMER, Ticketing and Administrative Assistant; ARIANE BOLDUC; Grants Manager THOMAS BATTENBERG, Personnel Manager and Music Librarian; YVETTE BOYER, Finance Manager; and, JULIA HARE, Operations and Education Director.

A heartfelt thanks to our Board of Trustees and Sustaining Board as well!

And, my shouts of “Brava” and “Bravo” to all of you, our listening audience! You are the reason that we do what we do, put on concerts for your enjoyment. Thanks for your continuing support.

I am confident that you will enjoy each of the pieces on this upcoming program. Following the performance of Bloch, Karl Pituch returns to the stage for Richard Strauss’s Horn Concerto No. 1, a truly great masterpiece.

After intermission ProMusica presents the reprise of Roberto Sierra’s energetic Guaracha, from the Serenata that he wrote in 2004 to celebrate the 30th wedding anniversary of our current Board President, Marty Campbell, and his wife, Marilyn. The music will make your foot tap. You’ll feel like dancing down the aisle. But, don’t leave yet . . . we will be concluding the concert, and the subscription season, with Antonin Dvorak’s charming and tunefully uplifting Czech Suite.

If one concert is not enough for you, plan to also join us for our season finale Artistic Circle on Friday evening, April 3rd. Donald Berman and Karl Pituch will serenade you. Good food and drink will also be shared, as will good company and conversation.

That is the essence of the ProMusica experience – great music shared with good friends. Let ProMusica enrich your life. Share ProMusica with your friends. “Put a little orchestra in your life.”

See you soon!

Cheers,

Timothy Russell
Music Director
